STUDENT MESSAGES

For Use Through November 25, 2017

For Use Through March 10, 2018

HALEY ALBERS, A RECENT GRAUDATE FROM CHENEY HIGH SCHOOL, SAYS IN COMPETITION, SPORTSMANSHIP IS A VALUE THAT SHOULD BE STRIVED FOR AT ALL TIMES. FANS SHOULD REMEMBER TO CHEER POSITIVELY FOR THEIR TEAM. PLAYERS SHOULD TREAT BOTH THEIR TEAMMATES AND OPPONENTS WITH RESPECT. WHEN GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP IS PRACTICED, THE ATMOSPHERE IS ENJOYABLE FOR EVERYONE INVOLVED.

A MESSAGE FROM THE KANSAS STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION AND THE STUDENT ADVISORY TEAM.

For Use Through March 10, 2018

UPHOLDING YOURSELF TO PRACTICE GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP IS A GREAT WAY TO BUILD YOUR CHARACTER AS A YOUNG ADULT. TOO MANY TIMES, ATHLETES AND STUDENT SECTIONS ARE SEEN RIDICULING THE OPPONENTS OR THE GAMES’ FACILITATORS. THIS BRINGS A NEGATIVE LIGHT TO A GAME THAT SHOULD BE PLAYED ONLY IN A FUN AND POSITIVE WAY. IT TAKES COURAGE AND AN ATTITUDE CHANGE TO CONVEY GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP. CATHERINE RIEKE, A SENIOR AT ST. JAMES ACADEMY IN LENEXA, KS, SAYS CHALLENGE YOURSELF TO UPHOLD NOT ONLY YOUR OWN DIGNITY, BUT THE DIGNITY OF YOUR SCHOOL NEXT TIME YOU GO OUT ON THE FIELD OR CHEER IN THE BLEACHERS BY COOPERATING WITH RULE 52.

A MESSAGE FROM THE KANSAS STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION AND THE STUDENT ADVISORY TEAM.

For Use Through March 10, 2018

SPORTSMANSHIP IS AN IMPORTANT PART OF BEING A GREAT TEAM, SAYS CALEB FRYE, A RECENT GRADUATE FROM MOUNDRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL. YOU CAN BE VERY COMPETITIVE, AGGRESSIVE AND HAVE A WILL TO WIN AND STILL SHOW RESPECT TO OPPONENTS AND OFFICIALS. A TRUE SIGN OF A LEADER IS SOMEONE WHO HAS GREAT CHARACTER AND HIGH MORALS. THESE ARE FACTORS THAT ARE PRESENT IN A TEAM THAT PRACTICES GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP. BEING A GREAT EXAMPLE IN ATTITUDE AND ACTIONS CAN INFLUENCE AND INSPIRE TEAMMATES AND FANS.

A MESSAGE FROM THE KANSAS STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION AND THE STUDENT ADVISORY TEAM.

For Use Through March 10, 2018

IN MANY ATHLETIC ACTIVITIES, A LOSS MAY BE BLAMED ON AN OFFICIAL. FANS AND TEAMS CLAIM THAT THEY HAD A BAD OFFICIAL OR THAT THE OFFICIAL JUST DOES NOT LIKE THEM. IT IS IMPORTANT TO REALIZE THAT WITHOUT OFFICIALS, YOU WOULD NOT BE PLAYING THE GAME YOU LOVE. THESE OFFICIALS KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING. AT YOUR NEXT GAME, RACHEL SCHENKER, A SENIOR AT OSWEGO HIGH SCHOOL, ENCOURAGES YOU TO THANK YOUR OFFICIALS.

A MESSAGE FROM THE KANSAS STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION AND THE STUDENT ADVISORY TEAM.

For Use Through March 10, 2018

IN SCHOOLS TODAY, IT SEEMS THERE IS A DISCONNECT BETWEEN THE COMMUNITY AND THE SCHOOL. ZACH SHIMA, A RECENT GRADUATE FROM TOPEKA WEST HIGH SCHOOL PROPOSES THAT WE SPONSOR MORE CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS FOR COMMUNITY OUTREACH TO HELP THOSE WHO NEED IT MOST. AT TOPEKA WEST, THEY WORK TOWARDS THIS GOAL WITH THE PAY IT FORWARD CLUB AND LEADERSHIP STUDIES CLASSES. WHEN SCHOOLS ARE INVOLVED, THE ENVIRONMENT IS MORE POSITIVE AND THEY RECEIVE GREATER SUPPORT FROM THESE COMMUNITIES.

A MESSAGE FROM THE KANSAS STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION AND THE STUDENT ADVISORY TEAM.

For Use Through March 10, 2018

HIGH SCHOOL OFFICIALS ARE ESSENTIAL FOR THE SURVIVAL OF SCHOOL ACTIVITIES. UNFORTUNATELY, THE NUMBER OF HIGH SCHOOL OFFICIALS IS DWINDLING. WITHOUT THESE HARD WORKING PERSONNEL, THERE WOULD BE NO FRIDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL GAMES, NO HIGH ENERY BASKETBALL GAMES, AS WELL AS NO GAMES OR MEETS FOR ANY OTHER SPORT. ARIANA COKER, A RECENT GRADUATE FROM SHAWNEE MISSION WEST HIGH SCHOOL IN OVERLAND PARK, KS ASKS TO PLEASE HELP THE SURVIVAL OF HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS BY BEOCMING A KSHSAA OFFICAL TODAY.

A MESSAGE FROM THE KANSAS STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION AND THE STUDENT ADVISORY TEAM.

For Use Through March 10, 2018

SPORTSMANSHIP IS A TRAIT THAT IS FREQUENTLY OVERSHADOWED BY OUR COMPETITIVE SOCIETY THAT ENCOURAGES US TO WIN AT ANY COST, SAYS RYAN CUNNINGHAM, A SENIOR AT WASHBURN RURAL HIGH SCHOOL IN TOPEKA, KS. WHILE WINNING IS THE GOAL OF ATHLETES, COACHES AND FANS ALIKE, WINNING IS MEANINGLESS UNLESS IT INCLUDES FAIR PLAY, RESPECT FOR OPPONENTS, ENCOURAGEMENT FOR TEAMMATES AND A POSITIVE ATTITUDE, REGARDLESS OF THE OUTCOME. WHETHER YOU ARE AN ATHLETE OR A SPECTATOR, BE A GOOD SPORT, BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY, THE SCORE WILL BE FORGOTTEN BUT YOUR BEHAVIOR WON’T BE.

A MESSAGE FROM THE KANSAS STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION AND THE STUDENT ADVISORY TEAM.

For Use Through March 10, 2018

THROUGH PARTICIPATION IN SCHOOL ACTIVITIES, STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO LEARN AND DEVLEOP VALUABLE SKILLS AND LESSONS THEY NEED TO SUCCEED IN THE REAL WORLD LIKE HARD WORK, SELF-DISCIPLINE, FAIR PLAY AND TEAMWORK, SAYS TEL WITTMER, A RECENT GRADUATE FROM HOLTON HIGH SCHOOL. AS A RESULT OF BEING INVOLVED IN SCHOOL ACTIVITIES, STUDENTS WHO GAIN THESE SKILLS WILL BECOME MORE RESPONSIBLE ADULTS, PRODUCTIVE CITIZENS AND SKILLED PROFESSIONALS.

A MESSAGE FROM THE KANSAS STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION AND THE STUDENT ADVISORY TEAM.

For Use Through March 10, 2018

AT MOST SPORTS COMPETITIONS, THERE IS A VERY LOUD ENVIRONMENT. COACHES YELLING, PLAYERS COMMUNICATING WITH THEIR TEAM, SPECTATORS SHOUTING WORDS OF ENCOURAGMENT AND THE INEVITABLE JEERING AT WHATEVER CALLS THE OFFICALS MAKE. NEXT TIME YOU FEEL THE NEED TO COMPLAIN ABOUT A CALL, THINK ABOUT THIS. ARE YOU AGAINST IT PURELY BECAUSE IT WAS MADE AGAINST THE TEAM YOU’RE ROOTING FOR? MAYBE YOUR VANTAGE POINT IS DIFFERENT THAN THE OFFICALS AND YOU MIGHT NOT BE AT THE RIGHT VIEWING ANGLE TO SEE WHAT THEY SAW. DID THE PARTICIPANT ACTUALLY BREAK THE RULES AND YOU ARE JUST FRUSTRATED WITH THEIR ACTIONS? OFFICALS ARE HUMAN AND SOME CALLS MAY BE INCORRECT, BUT LINDSEY ANDERSON, A SENIOR AT CHAPMAN HIGH SCHOOL WANTS US TO CONSIDER TRYING TO KEEP A POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT BY ONLY VOICING POSITIVE THOUGHTS.

A MESSAGE FROM THE KANSAS STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION AND THE STUDENT ADVISORY TEAM.
