STUDENT MESSAGES

For Use Through March 9, 2019

"TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK." THIS COMMON CLICHÉ IS OFTEN OVER USED IN TODAY’S SOCIETY, SAYS STORM DIAL, A SENIOR AT EMPORIA HIGH SCHOOL. WORKING WITH OTHERS IS A LIFE SKLL THAT EVERYONE NEEDS. TEAMWORK IS THE ABILITY TO HARNESS OUR DIFFERENCES AND USE THEM TO REACH A COMMON GOAL. WE ALL SUCCEED TOGETHER OR NOT AT ALL.

A MESSAGE FROM THE KANSAS STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION AND THE STUDENT ADVISORY TEAM.

For Use Through March 9, 2019

ALEX HAMMEKE, A SENIOR AT ELLINWOOD HIGH SCHOOL, SAYS OFFICIALS ARE THE BACKBONE OF HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS, NOT ONLY IN KANSAS, BUT ACROSS THE NATION. IT IS HARDER TO FIND PEOPLE WILLING TO OFFICIATE THESE DAYS AS THEY ARE UNDER CONSTANT SCRUTINY BY THE PLAYERS, COACHES AND FANS. PLEASE REMEMBER, AT WHATEVER VENUE OR SPORT, OFFICIALS ARE HUMAN AND THEY MAKE MISTAKES JUST LIKE YOU OR ME. THEY DESERVE YOUR RESPECT! IF YOU WANT ANY INFORMATION OR ARE THINKING ABOUT BECOMING AN OFFICIAL, PLEASE CONTACT THE KSHSAA AT 785-273-5329.

A MESSAGE FROM THE KANSAS STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION AND THE STUDENT ADVISORY TEAM.

For Use Through March 9, 2019

SPORTSMANSHIP GOES HAND IN HAND WITH SPORTS, SAYS RACHEL SCHENKER, A RECENT GRADUATE FROM OSWEGO HIGH SCHOOL. PEOPLE OFTEN THINK ONLY ATHLETES HAVE TO BE RESPECTFUL, BUT THIS IS NOT TRUE. EVERYONE INVOLVED IN AN ACTIVITY SHOULD HAVE SPORTSMANSHIP. PARENTS, STUDENTS, PLAYERS AND COACHES MUST HAVE RESPECT FOR EACH OTHER AND THE OFFICIALS. SPORTSMANSHIP IS THE GOLDEN RULE OF SPORTS; TREAT OTHERS AS YOU WOULD LIKE TO BE TREATED.

A MESSAGE FROM THE KANSAS STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION AND THE STUDENT ADVISORY TEAM.

For Use Through March 9, 2019

AT MOST SPORTS COMPETITIONS THERE IS A VERY LOUD ENVIRONMENT, SAYS LINDSEY ANDERSON, A RECENT GRADUATE FROM CHAPMAN HIGH SCHOOL. COACHES YELLING, PLAYERS COMMUNICATING WITH THEIR TEAM, SPECTATORS SHOUTING WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT, AND THE INEVITABLE JEERING AT WHATEVER CALLS OFFICALS MAKE. NEXT TIME YOU FEEL THE NEED TO COMPLAIN ABOUT A CALL, THINK ABOUT THIS, ARE YOU AGAINST IT PURELY BECAUSE IT WAS MADE AGAINST THE TEAM YOU’RE ROOTING FOR, OR DID THE PATICIPANT ACTUALLY BREAK THE RULES? OFFICIALS ARE HUMAN AND SOME CALLS MAY BE INCORRECT, BUT CONSIDER TRYING TO KEEP A POSITIVE ENVIRONMENT BY ONLY VOICING POSITIVE THOUGHTS.

A MESSAGE FROM THE KANSAS STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION AND THE STUDENT ADVISORY TEAM.

For Use Through March 9, 2019

TEAMWORK IS A CRITICAL TRAIT THAT EVERY TEAM, PLAYER AND MEMBER MUST SHOW IN EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES, SAYS COYD GARDNER, A RECENT GRADUATE FROM CENTRAL HEIGHTS HIGH SCHOOL IN RICHMOND, KS. IN A WAY, IT COULD EVEN BE CONSIDERED THE MOST IMPORTANT OF ALL TRAITS STUDENTS LEARN DURING THEIR TIME IN HIGH SCHOOL. TEAMWORK APPLIES TO ALL AREAS OF LIFE, SUCH AS WORKING AS A TEAM IN THE WORKPLACE. ACQUIRING THE ABILITY TO WORK AS A TEAM SHOWS AN INDIVIDUAL HAS GOOD CHARACTER, MORALS AND A BRIGHT FUTURE IN THEIR SIGHTS.

A MESSAGE FROM THE KANSAS STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION AND THE STUDENT ADVISORY TEAM.

For Use Through March 9, 2019

JACE WATKINS, A SENIOR AT BURLINGTON HIGH SCHOOL, SAYS YOUTH, INTERSCHOLASTIC, COLLEGIATE AND PROFESSIONAL SPORTS ALL HAVE ONE THING IN COMMON: OFFICIALS. OFFICIALS ARE NECESSARY FOR THE REGULATION, MANAGEMENT AND OVERSIGHT OF THE GAME. OFFICIALS, LIKE ATHLETES AND COACHES, ARE DOING THEIR VERY BEST. ALWAYS BE COURTEOUS, UNDERSTANDING AND ABIDING BY THE OFFICIAL’S DECISIONS. GIVE THEM A BREAK AND THANK THEM FOR THE JOB THEY DO. WITHOUT OFFICIALS, WE WOULD HAVE NO GAME TO PLAY.

A MESSAGE FROM THE KANSAS STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION AND THE STUDENT ADVISORY TEAM.

For Use Through March 9, 2019

STUDENT ATHLETES NEED TO EXEMPLIFY SPORTSMANSHIP BY BEING COURTEOUS TO FELLOW TEAMMATES, OPPONENTS AND OFFICIALS, SAYS CYNAE WILEY, A SENIOR AT SOUTH HAVEN HIGH SCHOOL. WE NEED TO ENCOURAGE OUR PARENTS AND FANS TO BE KIND TO OFFICIALS. AS CURRENT OFFICIALS GET OLDER, NEW OFFICIALS WILL NEED TO EVENTUALLY TAKE THEIR PLACE, BUT HARDLY ANYONE IS STEPPING UP. IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES, LEARN THE RULES, TAKE THE TEST AND BECOME AN OFFICIAL. WE NEED MORE PEOPLE WILLING TO OFFICIATE THE GAMES THAT STUDENT ATHLETES ENJOY PLAYING.

A MESSAGE FROM THE KANSAS STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION AND THE STUDENT ADVISORY TEAM.

For Use Through March 9, 2019

IF YOU HAVE EVER BEEN TO A SPORTING EVENT AND HAVE FELT THE OFFICIAL WAS NOT DONG A VERY GOOD JOB, THEN JORDAN GRIFFIN, A RECENT GRADUATE FROM GOESSEL HIGH SCHOOL, ENCOURAGES YOU TO BECOME AN OFFICIAL. YOU CAN FIND OUT MORE ABOUT BECOMING AN OFFICIAL ON THE KANSAS STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION WEBSITE AND FILL OUT AN APPLICATION. BEING AN OFFICIAL IS A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO HELP DEVELOP YOUNG ATHLETES WHILE EARNING EXTRA MONEY.

A MESSAGE FROM THE KANSAS STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION AND THE STUDENT ADVISORY TEAM.

For Use Through March 9, 2019

CATHERINE RIEKE, A RECENT GRADUATE FROM ST. JAMES ACADEMY IN LENEXA, KS, SAYS PRACTICING GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP IS THE NUMBER ONE WAY TO SUPPORT YOUR HIGH SCHOOL TEAM. WHEN TEAMS AND FANS EXHIBIT NEGATIVE ATTITUDES TOWARDS THEIR OPPONENTS OR OFFICIALS, THEY PROMOTE NEGATIVE RESULTS. PLAYERS AND FANS, PLEASE PROMOTE GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP. REMEMBER, IT IS JUST A GAME.

A MESSAGE FROM THE KANSAS STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION AND THE STUDENT ADVISORY TEAM.

For Use Through March 9, 2019

SPORTSMANSHIP IS A TRAIT THAT IS FREQUENTLY OVERSHADOWED BY OUR COMPETITIVE SOCIETY THAT ENCOURAGES US TO WIN AT ANY COST, SAYS RYAN CUNNINGHAM, A RECENT GRADUATE FROM WASHBURN RURAL HIGH SCHOOL IN TOPEKA, KS. WHILE WINNING IS THE GOAL OF ATHLETES, COACHES AND FANS ALIKE, WINNING IS MEANINGLESS UNLESS IT INCLUDES FAIR PLAY, RESPECT FOR OPPONENTS, ENCOURAGEMENT FOR TEAMMATES AND A POSITIVE ATTITUDE, REGARDLESS OF THE OUTCOME. WHETHER YOU ARE AN ATHLETE OR A SPECTATOR, BE A GOOD SPORT, BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY, THE SCORE WILL BE FORGOTTEN BUT YOUR BEHAVIOR WON’T BE.

A MESSAGE FROM THE KANSAS STATE HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION AND THE STUDENT ADVISORY TEAM.

For Use Through March 9, 2019

HADLEY HAUSER, A SENIOR AT NORTON COMMUNITY HIGH SCHOOL, SAYS FINDING WAYS TO WORK TOGETHER WITH A GROUP OF PEOPLE TO ACHIEVE A COMMON GOAL IS ONE OF THE MANY LESSONS STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATE IN SCHOOL ACTIV ITIES LEARN OUTSIDE OF THE CLASSROOM. WHETHER IT IS PLANNING A SUCCESSFUL KAY CONFERENCE, COORDINATING AN END OF THE YEAR BANQUET OR WORKING TOGETHER TO HOLD ON TO A LAST MINUTE LEAD IN A BALL GAME, TEAMWORK IS A LIFELONG SKILL.
