THANKS TO STATE TOURNAMENT OFFICIALS ( INCLUDED 4 1ST TIME STATE OFFICIALS)
Congratulations to all state tournament officials on a job well done! These exciting state tournaments are a product of teamwork and KSHSAA registered officials play an valuable role: from the 48 KSHSAA registered officials who served as the primary contest officials to the countless other registered officials who served as line judges, score keepers, timers and libero trackers. Thanks for your gold medal teamwork!

We are pleased that 4 registered officials worked their first state tournament this past week-end. The time and energy that officials commit to interscholastic volleyball is appreciated and rewarded via the member schools vote of confidence.

MATCH CONTRACTS FOR THE 2018 SEASON
Soon, League Commissioners and/or School Athletic Directors will be extending contracts for matches and tournaments for the 2018 volleyball season. MANY CONTRACTS ARE BEING MADE VIA THE ARBITER ASSIGNING SYSTEM. ALL CONTRACTS, REGARDLESS, SHOULD BE MADE IN WRITING AND CLEARLY IDENTIFY THE DETAILS OF THE CONTEST - Date, Location, Starting Time, Level of Play (i.e., HS, Jr. High, Jr. Varsity, etc.), Number of Matches, Salary per Match, Mileage Reimbursement (optional in some leagues/schools), etc.

Officials, you are responsible & encouraged to contact league commissioners and/or school Athletic Directors regarding your availability & interest in working matches.

NFHS SURVEY AVAILABLE EARLY NOVEMBER
Once again, the NFHS Volleyball survey will be available to all registered officials and KSHSAA HS and MS coaches. This survey provides everyone a voice in the NFHS Volleyball rules: feedback on the changes implemented for the 2017-2018 season as well as your input on potential changes for the future. Watch for an email from the KSHSAA soon regarding the survey. YOUR PARTICIPATION IS VALUABLE & STRONGLY ENCOURAGED!

IDEAS FOR RULE CHANGES WELCOME
All officials & coaches who would like to suggest a rule change that is not a part of the survey are encouraged to contact Cheryl Gleason @ the KSHSAA (785/273-5329); cgleason@kshsaa.org; Cell/Text (785/231-8895).Recommendations for NFHS playing rules are needed by 11/15. Coaches, recommendations for the KSHSAA volleyball program are always welcome and will be forwarded to the KCA volleyball representative for a survey item.

AREA SUPERVISOR EVALUATIONS
Registered officials who were assigned to work a sub-state tournament were mailed an Area Supervisor Evaluation form & return envelope. If you did not receive a form and would like to complete this evaluation, please send your name/request to levans@kshsaa.org or cgleason@kshsaa.org OFF-SEASON PREPARATION - WHAT’S YOUR GOAL FOR 2018? Preparation in athletic officiating is never ending. Preparation cannot be limited to the period during which matches are played. The season is too short and the matches too few to achieve the necessary proficiency. The officials approach (attitude) to officiating will, in large measure, determine the degree and extent of preparation.
Officials off-season preparation should include, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Maintain a physical conditioning program
  • Replace/repair officiating gear (uniform, equipment)
  • Attend camps/clinics; Stay abreast of the latest offensive/defensive systems
  • Review procedures, become reacquainted with the academics of officiating
  • Take time for philosophical reflection

There are no shortcuts to becoming a competent and complete official. Preparation is a result of unremitting thought, study, review and labor.

KSHSAA OFFICIAL CLINICS AND KSHSAA COACHING SCHOOL TOPICS
The KSHSAA would appreciate input from both coaches and officials regarding content/topics for upcoming Officials Clinics and Coaching School. Both of these events provide a great educational experience for Kansas coaches and officials, therefore, we would welcome your ideas for event content. If you have an interest in being a speaker/presenter, please notify Cheryl Gleason @ cgleason@kshsaa.org

REGISTER FOR THE 2018-19 SEASON
In the spring of 2018 the KSHSAA will mail registration materials to all 2017-2018 registered officials. These materials allow officials to register for the 2018-19school year. Beginning July 15, experienced officials (those registered during the 2017-18 season) will pay a $70 fee for 1 sport and $25 for each additional sport. MARK YOU CALENDAR!!

UPDATE ADDRESS/PERSONAL INFO CHANGES
Officials are reminded that if you have a change of address or change in your name, phone number, email address, etc. you are responsible to go to your personal page on the KSHSAA website and make the appropriate change. In addition, all officials are strongly encouraged to post an appropriate personal photo on this site. NOTE: Your picture is not available to “the public”. It is very helpful to school administrators and for fellow officials that you might be assigned to work with.
Remember –the KSHSAA cannot contact you if you don’t let us know of any contact changes.

WANTED: OFFICIALS FOR 2018-2019
This season there were 842 KSHSAA registered volleyball officials. While the registered numbers may still seem rather large, if you consider how many volleyball matches take place across the state on any given night or week-end, there continues to be an ongoing need to recruit new officials to fill the needs of the member schools. During the off-season, all officials are encouraged to promote among friends, former coaches and players, etc. the opportunity to register as an official in the 2018 season. ARE YOU GOING TO RETIRE FROM OFFICIATING? If so, you are encouraged to find someone to take your place.

PLEASE REFER INTERESTED INDIVIDUALS TO THE OFICIALS BROCHURE on the KSHSAA website http://www.kshsaa.org/Public/Official/Brochure.pdf

THANKS FOR SERVING KSHSAA SCHOOLS
On behalf of the KSHSAA membership, thanks for serving as a KSHSAA registered volleyball official. School activities are an exciting part of the school year. Athletic officials play a valuable role in providing a consistent interpretation of the rules and ensuring that the activity is played in an educational environment.

We look forward to your service in the 2018 season!
