Week 2: Pick Six SCK Recaps

KAPAUN MOUNT CARMEL 29, WICHITA EAST 22

Will Thengvall caught an 18-yard touchdown pass from fellow sophomore Dylan Hamilton with 2:01 remaining to complete the visiting Crusaders' second-half comeback.

Kapaun trailed 16-7 at halftime and 22-14 after three quarters. The Crusaders pulled even with 7:37 remaining when senior Will Doolittle scored on a 12-yard run, then caught a two-point conversion pass from Hamilton, who was 8 of 15 passing for 123 yards and three touchdowns. Kapaun's game-winner came on a third-and-14 play, as Hamilton dropped a pass over two Blue Aces defenders to Thengvall, who tumbled into the end zone as he caught it.

East, which fell to 0-2, got 174 passing yards from sophomore DaeOnte Mitchell. The Aces built their halftime lead on a 23-yard run by Nick Dooley and a 1-yard run by Mitchell.

UP NEXT: Wichita Northwest (1-1) at Kapaun (2-0); Wichita Southeast (1-1) at Wichita East (0-2).

WICHITA NORTHWEST 62, WICHITA HEIGHTS 40

Northwest bounced back from its first regular-season loss in four years in a big way, running for more than 700 yards and scoring the first 35 points in a victory at Heights.

Sophomore Cencere Thompson ran for 281 yards and three touchdowns, junior LJ Phillips added 260 yards, four rushing touchdowns and a receiving score, and senior quarterback Geremiah Moore ran for 186 yards and a touchdown.

The Grizzlies, who dropped three spots to No. 4 in KSHSAA Covered's Class 5A rankings after their 37-27 loss to Bishop Carroll, surrendered 21 straight points after their fast start, including a 65-yard touchdown by Heights' John Randle. But Northwest's offense rejoined the shootout in the second half, outscoring the Falcons 27-26.

UP NEXT: Wichita Northwest (1-1) at Kapaun (2-0); Wichita Heights (1-1) at Wichita North (0-2).

AUGUSTA 21, EL DORADO 14

Sophomore Gavin Kiser ran for two touchdowns and passed for another as visiting Augusta avenged last season's 14-7 loss to the Wildcats.

Kiser's 2-yard run opened the scoring in the first quarter. After El Dorado's Jaydon Sundgren answered with a 64-yard touchdown, Kiser countered with a 7-yard scoring run that put the Orioles up 14-6 at halftime.

In the third quarter, he connected with Gage Kaus for a 9-yard touchdown that stretched Augusta's advantage to 21-6. El Dorado's Gannon White hit Drew Veatch for a 43-yard touchdown in the fourth to cap the scoring. Sundgren finished with 146 yards on 23 carries, but it wasn't enough to stop Augusta from its first 2-0 start in four years.

UP NEXT: Circle (1-1) at Augusta (2-0); Labette County (0-2) at El Dorado (1-1).

HILLSBORO 25, HESSTON 14

Hillsboro's Frank Wichert returned an interception for a touchdown against Hesston in their 2020 meeting. He did it again Friday, and this time it helped the Trojans snap an eight-game losing streak to their Central Kansas League nemesis.

Wichert's 96-yard return with 1:33 to play prevented Hesston's potential go-ahead score and sealed the victory. The senior also hauled in a touchdown pass from quarterback Matthew Potucek, who completed 14 of 24 for 144 yards.

Potucek ran for 74 yards and a touchdown, and senior Jamari Harris ran 21 times for 85 yards and a score. Hesston, which trailed 12-7 at halftime and 19-7 after three quarters, cut its deficit to five points with 10:33 remaining on a 6-yard pass from Hudson Ferralez to Brayden Schilling.

UP NEXT: Hillsboro (2-0) at Smoky Valley (2-0); Pratt (2-0) at Hesston (1-1).

LITTLE RIVER 14, CLIFTON-CLYDE 6

Juniors Rylan Konen and Braden Young each ran for a touchdown and host Little River turned in another dominant defensive effort to hold off Clifton-Clyde in a battle of ranked Eight-Player Division I teams.

The reigning state champion and fourth-ranked Redskins didn't need much offense, limiting No. 5 Clifton-Clyde to 116 total yards. Konen's 20-yard run helped Little River lead 8-6 at halftime. Young scored on a 39-yard run in the third quarter for the game's final points.

Junior Braxton Lafferty ran 17 times for 115 yards for Little River, which had 284 total yards. Clifton-Clyde got the ball back at its own 5 with 2:29 to play, but could not put together a game-tying drive.

UP NEXT: Little River (2-0) at Goessel (1-1); Clifton-Clyde (1-1) TBA.

SEDAN 60, FLINTHILLS 14

After winning its first season opener since 2012, host Flinthills couldn't contain Sedan senior Brec Long in an eight-player battle that ended at halftime.

Long, a transfer from Caney Valley, completed 7 of 10 passes for 192 yards and six touchdowns, and ran 11 times for 170 yards and two scores. Long's first-quarter touchdown runs of 7 and 64 yards helped the Blue Devils build a 24-0 lead.

Quarterback Hunter Lowmaster got Flinthills on the board with a 4-yard run early in the second quarter, and Kendall Pinkerton added a 65-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. But Long and tight end Dameion Hatton helped Sedan close the game with 30 unanswered points, connecting on touchdown passes of 59, 37 and 25 yards. Hatton had five receptions for 140 yards, all touchdowns.

UP NEXT: Sedan (2-0) at Central-Burden (2-0); West Elk (2-0) at Flinthills (1-1).
