The Libero Player

Volleyball

WHAT IS THE LIBERO PLAYER?
  • Considered a defensive specialist; libero is a back row player
  • Use of the libero is a coaching strategy and its use is optional
  • A team may designate only 1 libero per game (must be on roster and starting line-up)
  • A team may designate a different libero for subsequent games.
THE LIBERO MAY...
  • May serve as team captain
  • May serve in one rotation
  • May replace any player on the back row
  • May be used as an exceptional sub (when doing so must wear team uniform top; team has no libero player for remainder of game
  • May be replaced by teammate (if injured) at coaches discretion (not immediately). If replaced, may not re-enter game.
THE LIBERO MAY NOT...
  • May not block or attempt to block
  • May not set the ball using an overhead finger pass while on or in front of the attack line extended for an attack above the height of the net
  • May not complete an attack (on/off court) if, at contact, ball is entirely above height of net
  • May not replace a disqualified player
LIBERO UNIFORM
  • Shorts = Same/identical to teammates
  • Jersey/Top = Must be contrasting color to those worn by teammates (primary color must be different than any color that is +25% on teammates)
  • May be a different style (t-shirt acceptable)
  • Must have a legal number (may not be a duplicate number)
  • Libero playing as regular player must have a second (team) uniform - same number preferred
  • Libero may have 2 different numbers (both must be entered on the team roster - example: 15 (L10).
LT (LIBERO TRACKER)
  • Not scorekeeper; Will sit next to scorekeeper; Record starting line up on tracking sheet & all subs during game
  • Tracker could be clock/timer operator
  • Home team responsible to provide LT (if home team does not use libero, visitor provide) - prior communication between schools encouraged.
  • Notify umpire if no libero identified on line-up
  • LT MUST: Make sure 1 rally before libero replacement; libero must be replaced by same player libero replaced.
  • Coaches encouraged to work with school administrators to secure and train a libero tracker (adult or student)
  • Schools hosting quads may ask one of 3 visiting schools to provide the second tracker.
  • NO LIBERO TRACKER, NO LIBERO!
  • (See NFHS Rule Book)
