Weekly Announcements

Week 1 - November 5, 2024

To: High School and Middle School Basketball Coaches and Registered KSHSAA Basketball Officials

From: Kyle Doperalski, KSHSAA Assistant Executive Director

With the calendar flipping to November, it is time to really start to think about basketball for those who aren’t already playing.

We have two in-person rules meetings left. Tonight (Tuesday) at Shawnee Mission Northwest and tomorrow in our office here in Topeka. On Thursday night, there is a live zoom webinar. You must be on by 7:10 p.m. to receive credit. All meetings start at 7 p.m. I have enjoyed seeing officials and coaches throughout the state the last few weeks. Northeast Kansas, I’m hoping to see a lot of you in person tonight and tomorrow!

Situation practice: Team B has been warned for faking being fouled in the 1st quarter. In the fourth quarter A1 shoots, B1 fakes being fouled on A1’s unsuccessful shot attempt. The official gives the faking being fouled signal and allows play to continue. A2 rebounds A1’s unsuccessful try. A2 shoots and misses. A3 rebounds A2’s unsuccessful try. A3 is fouled in the act of shooting by B3. A3’s try is successful. Ruling: The official reporting the foul on B3 reports the foul and counts the basket for A3. The foul on B3 counts toward the bonus. The official who signaled the faking being fouled infraction correctly let the play develop then reports the faking being fouled infraction. The team technical foul on Team B counts toward the bonus. A3 shoots one free throw with the lane clear. Team A shoots two free throws for the team technical foul on Team B with the lane clear. Team A is awarded the ball out of bounds at the division line opposite the table.

For Coaches: The Ohio State University, in partnership with the Greater Wichita Athletic League and the KSHSAA is conducting a study to examine the education and training needs, interests, and practices of Kansas high school and middle school sport coaches. We are requesting you consider participating in this important data collection. The survey is completely voluntary and will take 20-30 minutes to complete. This information will provide valuable insight into opportunities to better support you as a coach and to improve school sports in Kansas. https://go.osu.edu/kansascoachsurvey

For Coaches: Buffer week is next week. The intent of Buffer Week for students to have a break from athletic activities. Regardless of if you agree or not, if you have a question about something students can do involving shooting in a school gym with a parent or staff member, individual meetings with coaches, etc., it is very likely a violation. There have been a few questions about what is permissible or not. Please refer to the email on Oct 22 for some guidance.

For Coaches: After I wrap up rules meetings this week, I will begin to look at region assignments and hosts which will be announced around the first date of competition, December 5th this year, similar to sub-state assignments in the past. There have been a couple question about region assignments relative to volleyball regions. Remember last year, co-ops impacted six of our seven classifications for basketball. For this reason and the fact we don’t know which schools will have a team or not, region assignments will very likely be different than volleyball.
