Week 4 - April 8, 2024

NEW - Preparation for Regional Tournaments
In preparation for regional tournament play, participating schools must do the following:

1. Regional Entry Form TNS-2: Hand deliver KSHSAA Form TNS-2 (place in a sealed envelope) to your regional manager the day of your coaches meeting, prior to the seeding of the tournament.
2. Tennis Balls: Information on the tennis balls used for regional and state tournaments is in your Tennis Manual on page 23. For regional play, teams are to bring one container of new tennis balls per entry (singles/doubles). A school entering 2 singles and 2 doubles (max) = 4 cans of tennis balls.
3. Player Season Records: Throughout the season all coaches are to be posting season competition results on the KSHSAA online program. Coaches are required to bring copies of these completed records for all tournament entries. Bring 1 copy for each coach plus the tournament manager.

NEW - Seeding Regional Tournaments
The Seeding Procedure and Seeding Criteria is described in the 2023-2024 KSHSAA Tennis Manual on page 28. Please be reminded:

1. Coaches must always keep in mind the contest essentially belongs to the contestants. Coaches should seed their players and vote in the most ethical and fair manner to maintain the integrity of the seeding procedure for all athletes, not just their own players.
2. You may not concede a seed.

NEW - State Tournament Seeding Meetings
The seeding meetings for state tennis will take place on Monday, May 6, 2024, and Tuesday, May 7, 2024, at 5 pm and 7 pm. It is imperative that coaches are aware of the NEW seeding procedure and seeding criteria for the state tournament. Please see page 35 in the Tennis Manual for information regarding the new seeding procedure and view the video prepared by Andrew Davids (Seeding Proposal Video - 2023 (youtube.com))

The seeding meeting Zoom links will be sent via email to participating school’s ADs by 9 am on Monday, May 6, 2024.

Heat Illness/Prevention
While spring sport coaches are not required to take the NFHS Heat Illness Prevention course, it is highly recommended. As temperatures increase, it is critical that athletes properly hydrate, and coaches are aware of the signs/symptoms of heat illness and are knowledgeable about preventative measures. Please consider taking this free course through NFHS!

Win/Loss Records
Coaches are expected to record the competition information for their players. The KSHSAA has a link on the front right-hand side page of the tennis page to record this online information. Be sure to record results for all regular season competition as well as regional and state competition at the end of the season. Results are archived at this location from previous years.

Week 2 - March 4, 2024

First Day of Competition
The first day competition may be scheduled is Thursday, March 7, 2024.

Tennis Emergency Action Planning
Boys tennis and boys golf EAP Rehearsal Day is scheduled for Monday, March 4, 2024. Have a plan and practice the plan!

Win/Loss Records
Coaches are expected to record the competition information for their players. The KSHSAA has a link on the front right-hand side page of the tennis page to record this online information. Be sure to record results for all regular season competition as well as regional and state competition at the end of the season. Results are archived at this location from previous years.

Boy's Win/Loss Records

Days of Competition – Rule 41-2-4
High School: No student representing a member school shall participate in more than EIGHT days of interschool competition during a season, exclusive of regional, sub-state and state tournaments.

1. Two dual meets may be substituted for one day of tournament competition provided no loss of instructional time would take place for competition and/or travel.
2. Schools are encouraged to schedule as many quadrangular or smaller events as possible. It is recommended these events start after school hours.
3. On those days when school time is used, only four matches or tournaments may start prior to 3 p.m. C.T.

Middle/Junior High School: No student representing a member school shall participate in more than SEVEN days of interschool competition during a season.

Welcome to the 2024 Boys Tennis Season
The time is here for another season of boys’ tennis. Weekly newsletters will be sent to coaches and posted on the KSHSAA tennis website. If you have questions throughout the season or unusual situations that arise to include in this newsletter, my email is ssmith@kshsaa.org.

Coaching Opportunities
On page 25 of the Tennis Manual, under Time Issues #3, here is the clarification on when coaches are allowed to coach.

• b. Changing ends = 90 seconds max
• c. End of a set = 2 minutes max
• d. Split sets = 10 minutes max (shorter if players agree)
• e. Before tiebreak = 90 seconds max (6-all or 8-all pro set)
• f. Before super tiebreak = 3 minutes max

All times listed above must be adhered to by the one (1) coach that is salaried by the school.

Student Manager Guidelines
School tennis players who serve as team managers during the opposite tennis season must confine their duties to traditional managerial tasks (i.e., keeping statistics, organizing equipment, pre- and post-practice/match duties, etc.) They may not hit (play) in practice as this would be a violation of the KSHSAA Rule 30, Seasons of Activity.
